The compact cassette, also known as the Musicassette (MC), is a magnetic tape format used for audio recording and playback. Cassettes were issued both as prerecorded releases and as blank tapes intended for recording.
Initially developed for dictation, the format became suitable for music as recording fidelity improved. It gradually displaced Stereo 8 cartridges and reel-to-reel tapes in many domestic applications and was also used for portable audio and computer data storage. From the early 1970s to the late 1990s, it was a major format for prerecorded music, alongside vinyl records and, later, compact discs.
