The Game, Queen’s eighth studio album, was released on 30 June 1980. It became the band’s first number-one album in the United States. Another One Bites the Dust and Crazy Little Thing Called Love also topped the US singles chart. The album marked Queen’s first use of a synthesiser, an Oberheim OB-X.
The album’s comparatively concise pop and rock arrangements differ from the range of styles heard on Jazz and anticipate some of the directions explored on Hot Space. Its running time is approximately thirty-six minutes, making it one of Queen’s shorter studio albums.
A DVD-Audio edition issued in 2003 includes 5.1 surround mixes. The multichannel version of Coming Soon uses an alternate backing track because the final master tapes were reportedly unavailable during remixing.
The EMI CD sleeve uses a different photograph from the original LP and cassette: Roger Taylor’s arms are folded, and Brian May’s hand is no longer resting on his hip. This alternate image also appeared on the 2003 DTS DVD-Audio cover.
Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Sail Away Sweet Sister, Coming Soon and Save Me were recorded in June and July 1979. The remaining tracks followed between February and May 1980.
