The Miracle, Queen’s thirteenth studio album, was released in 1989 after recording sessions that began in January 1988 and continued for approximately a year. The band credited the compositions collectively to Queen, reflecting a more collaborative approach to the release.

According to Roger Taylor, the working title The Invisible Man was replaced by The Miracle shortly before release. Its sleeve, created with Quantel Paintbox technology, merges the four members’ faces into a single image; the back cover similarly combines their eyes. Illustrator Derek Riggs has claimed a resemblance to his artwork for The Clairvoyant. The album reached number one in several European countries, including the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
