A Kind of Magic, released in 1986, is Queen’s twelfth studio album. Several tracks were associated with the film Highlander, directed by Russell Mulcahy, and the project was among the band’s early digitally recorded albums.
It was Queen’s final studio album promoted through a concert tour with Freddie Mercury. Footage used for the One Vision video shows the band at work in the recording studio.
The album reached number one in the United Kingdom. Its singles included A Kind of Magic, One Vision and Friends Will Be Friends. Who Wants to Live Forever features an orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen, while Princes of the Universe is associated with Highlander.
Critical responses were mixed, although retrospective assessments have frequently emphasised its place in Queen’s 1980s catalogue. It has also appeared in published rankings of albums and film soundtracks.
